
Ormond was the daughter of Josephine who was a lab technician and John Ormond (a stockbroker), in Epsom, Surrey. Ormond is the second child of five children to her parents. She went to private school, first Guildford High School and then Cranleigh School, where early stage performances like Guys and Dolls and My Fair Lady started to attract attention. After a short time in arts college, she was enrolled to Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. She graduated in 1988. Ormond made her debut appearance on British TV's 1989 show Traffik. It revolved around illicit heroin trade between the Far East and the streets of Europe. Ormond played the heroin-addicted daughter of the main character, an official from the Home Office minister who was involved in battling heroin imports. This early role won glowing reviews.
