Madekwe comes from a multi-cultural family. She was born within South London. Madekwe is English as well as her father is Nigerian. She grew on the south London community estate, and when she was 14, attended The Brit School. She attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London in which she earned an BA in acting. While attending the school, she was a part-time actor in a number of stage productions, including The King Henry V playing Princess Katherine as well as Wuthering Heights portraying Catherine Earnshaw.
Madekwe began her acting career through a short film called Storm Damage. Since then, she has appeared as a guest for Teachers, Doctors, Casualty and Drop Dead Gorgeous. Her breakthrough role came in 2007's Woody Allen movie Cassandra's Dream. It was in the role of Colin Farrell (who played the character of Cassandra) as well as Ewan McGrath. Madekwe was cast as Ashley Davenport for the ABC show The Beautiful Life. The two-episode series aired for just 2 weeks at The CW and then it came to an end. Ashley Davenport appeared in ABC drama Revenge as of February 2011. Madekwe had appeared in all episodes of the series' second season as a regular. In May 2013, the announcement was made that she would quit the show due to her appearance as a guest on the first episode of the series' third season. In the TV series Salem in 2014, she portrayed Tituba from 2014 until 2016. From June to July 2012, she got married to her long-time partner, actor Iddo Goldberg. Both have appeared in Secret Diary of a Call Girl. They also played as a couple in Salem.

Ashley Leggat grew up in Hamilton Ontario with an extended family. Her parents, Roy and Patty, as well as her brothers Brett, Todd, and Bram and Bram, were present. Ashley's brothers were all extremely athletic and played baseball and hockey in the winter as well as in the summer. They grew up playing the arenas and baseball. Ashley did not walk, but she did dance, so at age two and a half she started Baby Ballet -and she fell in love. Ashley became passionate about dance immediately after that. Ashley continued to dance competitively through high school graduation, in top divisions such as ballet, tap, Jazz Pointe, Acrobatics, Pointe Lyrical, Musical Theatre, Hip Hop, and much more. She won the top soloist awards at all of the most prestigious dance competitions like, International Dance Challenge, Showstoppers 5-6-7-8 Showtime, Flash Dance, and Dance, Dance, Dance among others.
